Shamanic frequency modulation is a reference to shamanism: a practice involving a practitioner, chants, drumming, the use of plants and cognitive transe. Even in a world where human beings tend to become more knowledgeable than conscious, it echoes what parties in front of a soundsystem are mirroring today.
And a reference to FM synthesis, a form of sound synthesis in which the frequency of a waveform is modulated by another frequency, from a modulating source known as an operator. Developed in the 1960s, it became a fundamental part of electronic music and is still broadly used in our synths and DAWs today.
This approach has guided artists and music producers towards the use of organic sounds, acoustic instruments, field recordings and other raw materials — sounds capable of moving the brain into more meditative states.
In each episode of this series, we will follow these occult combinations through a revolution of BPM, from 80 to 160. At the helm of this exploration is nemaü, following his instinct for digging through the past, wandering across genres and tracing the paths that lead to the sounds of today.
Lurking around labels such as On Board, Annuled Music, Area 127, Delsin Records, Aedi, Hypnus Records, Mruda, Accent and Virtual Forest... letting the inner frequency modulate. From electric ambient and shamanic halftime to trippy, dub-infused techno, the journey is always immersive.
